Our church school ethos and values

Onny Church of England Primary School is a village school, within a caring and supportive rural community. The school prides itself on its welcoming nature and inclusivity. Our pupils establish strong and supportive relationships with each other and all staff members as they move through the school.

At Onny, our pupils develop a love of learning. We provide a broad and balanced curriculum, which is creative, inspiring and fun. Alongside developing the skills and knowledge required within the national curriculum subjects, we feel it is important for our pupils to develop skills which will support them throughout their life. For example, team work, social emotional literacy and leadership skills.

To find out more about our curriculum offer, please visit the curriculum pages for Onny CofE Primary School.

Our school is situated in rural Shropshire, in Onibury, just off the A49 at the railway crossing. Our location is ideal for making use of the surrounding countryside. All of our pupils attend forest school sessions, which take place in our forest school site or in the woodlands above the school. In addition, we have a large field with a trim trail, which is surrounded by beautiful open fields. The children make use of the field for outdoor learning opportunities alongside sports coaching. We regularly attend sports festivals and competitions, where the children play alongside and compete against pupils from other schools in the local area and every child has the opportunity to attend these. Throughout their primary school years, pupils attend swimming lessons at Ludlow Leisure Centre.

We want our pupils to be ambitious and outward looking. We provide them with many opportunities to broaden their horizons. We have just introduced a new music curriculum where children learn to play four instruments (folk whistle, ukulele, cornet and violin). Pupils are introduced to a new instrument each year throughout the duration of key stage two. The arts are an important part of our curriculum. Pupils in key stage one perform in the nativity and year 6 pupils shine in their summer production. We have also taken pupils to perform in concerts at Theatre Severn.

We make use of school visits to ensure our pupils are culturally diverse, taking them to art galleries, museums plus many more. Pupils in upper key stage two have the opportunity to visit York on a summer residential. This visit enhances and brings to life many subjects within their curriculum and gives them an opportunity to spend time in an historical city. On alternate years, the children visit Arthog – an outdoor education centre. Here, the children take part in a range of adventurous activities including surfing, canoeing, rock climbing and abseiling. Both visits are extremely enjoyable and benefit the children in multiple ways.

At Onny, we have close connections with our local church, St Michaels, and the church community. We celebrate significant milestones throughout the Church and school year by attending a service. The school and the local community are invited to attend these services, which are largely led by the children. This is an opportunity for our pupils to share poems, artwork, musical performances and prayers that commemorate the significant event that the service is for e.g. Harvest, Remembrance, Christmas or Easter. In addition, we use the church as a learning resource to enable the children to develop their understanding of curriculum subjects as well as religious education. The school has a strong relationship with our local incumbent, Reverend Justin Parker, who supports the school with collective worship.

Onny Church of England Primary School is a small and friendly school. We aim to grow our pupils to be their best possible selves, educationally, spiritually and socially.
